In February 2009, I was diagnosed with EPP-Erythropoietic Protoporphyria. Before the diagnosis, I realized that anytime I was in the sun, I was uncomfortable. I would feel like I was burning and my skin would begin to swell. I would also get sick and have stabbing pain as a result. So, I began to avoid the sun whenever possible.

I've discovered that though I have many tricks to limit my exposure, I'm never really in the clear, unless I'm in my home. I am married with two children. I love these people God has given me. Though I "hole up" sometimes, I can't stay there. Life moves forward. So, my kids and I race to and from the house, car, store, wherever. My husband hustles everyone along, to protect mom. Sometimes it's funny. Sometimes it's a major pain. It has affected all of us. My family is very aware. We are bound together in these limitations.

We are always looking for a new trick, a new way to beat the sun.

The painting is me. It could be any woman. I pictured the sun as a being with arms outstretched, running along behind me. My expression is one that my kids, when they saw the painting, recognized in me. A little bit of fear mixed with distrust. What will you do to me?

Some people worship the sun. For me, it is best to remain one step ahead of it.
