My name is Autumn Mortensen and I have MPS VI. I’ve always enjoyed musicals, especially Phantom of the Opera. I was inspired by the many types of masks in the masquerade and the Phantom’s mask. Also, in the movie Labyrinth, one ballroom scene has a mass of people with creature inspired masks. My mask was also influenced by the feathers I found. None of the ready made masks had the right shape I wanted so I used a plaster to make the base for the mask. I wanted a real glamorous looking mask so I added lots of glitter. This mask served as a creative outlet while I was in rehab after a major spine surgery. Art has always served as a type of therapy for me, despite my physical limitations. I always have to find ways to adapt because my fingers don’t work like a normal person’s. It may take longer, but I love shocking people with what I can create.
