The day of my mother’s funeral I got more short of breath than I had been for weeks. My chest hurt immensely. At urgent care, they took x-rays and a chest CT. I was told to see a pulmonologist and that I had pneumonia. I was not alarmed. After various other tests, I was told I had Mycobacterium Avium Complex. Now I was alarmed, as I had never heard of the disease and I was the doctor’s first patient who had this nontuberculosis mycobacterium. The thing I remember the doctor saying about the CT was that there was a tree in bud pattern and a ground glass opacity. Three years later, my husband and I decided to go to the Botanical Gardens. I was scared. This was a big day for me. I was back to taking pictures for the first time and it would involve a lot of walking. I had come very far from the year of a lung resection and sleeping almost 20 hours per day. (Five years later, the fatigue is still a huge factor.)
