In 2005 I survived a brain tumor and Cushings Disease. That experience gave me a new lease on life. I woke up from surgery knowing that I had been given a gift; The realization that life, while fragile, is precious and should never be taken for granted. My way of life since then has been based on surrounding myself with people and things that make me happy, standing up for what I believe in, being true to myself in living life to the fullest and being engaged in my passions. These things have brought me back to my long time love affair with art.

Being diagnosed with a rare disease presents many challenges, but is also brings to the you a keen sense of AWARENESS that may have been lacking prior to this life-altering experience. My own journey and battle with Cushings Disease, while very individual, connected me to many people who while perfect strangers, were willing to support and help me. I have become very sensitive to the fact that many rare diseases are relatively unknown to not only the public, but the medical professionals that we rely on to treat us. This fact reiterates how important AWARENESS is! This was the basis for my series of artwork that I call “I CARE WEAR.” I wanted to create an awareness ribbons that were pretty and expressed hope. I used flowers as the inspiration for these awareness ribbons as flowers symbolize fragile beauty. I created nine different colored awareness ribbons on canvas for various causes. This particular piece of art, the blue and yellow ribbon, is the CUSHINGS AWARENESS ribbon and is very near and dear to my heart as a Cushings Survivor.
