Although my artistic skill is limited, I do enjoy expressing myself creatively. The artistic process allows me freedom to convey a variety of thoughts and feelings, disturbing as they may be, that come with having an eight year old son with a rare, genetic disorder. I find it difficult to communicate to friends, even family members the mixed emotions that accompany the uncertainties and the unknowns that I face as a parent of a child with an "orphan" disease. It is extremely frustrating to know that you are being heard, but not understood. The concern people show is genuine and well intentioned, yet I find little comfort from blank stares and nodding heads that give way to a plethora of unsolicited medical advice. Through the creative process, my innermost, unspoken thoughts are accepted and affirmed. From the start of this project to its completion, I experienced a therapeutic release, a sense of undeniable understanding, and a feeling of overwhelming peace as I witnessed my thoughts come to life.
